Typhoon Basyang has claimed 5 lives in Iligan City

ILIGAN CITY — Typhoon Basyang has now claimed five lives in Iligan City. A 60-year-old tricycle driver who lives in Purok Manuang, Barangay Tubod, Iligan City, is the most recent victim.

In the meantime, the city’s clearing efforts are being stepped up by the local authorities, particularly in regions that have been badly impacted by flooding.

The DPWH, BJMP, PNP, Army, ICDRRMO, and other government agencies and non-governmental organizations are assisting one another in clearing the road in Barangay Mahayahay. Due to the Tubod Bridge’s temporary shutdown, the DPWH has issued a travel advisory.

Due to current road-clearing and declogging efforts, all vehicles will be temporarily prohibited from using the Tubod Bridge in Barangay Tubod, Iligan City. Other options include the Tambacan Bridge and the Iligan City Diversion Road.

According to Barangay Captain Anthony Pacaña, the typhoon had an impact on nearly 80% of the people and businesses in Barangay Poblacion.

“We are still in the process of accounting sa atong mga establishments how many numbers how much is the cost na mga affected, so the team is on the process of gathering information.”

He went on to say that aiding the impacted residents is the barangay’s first priority.

Because of the extent of the typhoon’s damage, businesses that have been impacted must get in touch with the local administration.

The city government has begun distributing relief goods, including food packs, drinking water, and blankets, to affected residents. Authorities also warned residents living near rivers and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow evacuation orders if conditions worsen.

Meanwhile, weather officials cautioned that intermittent rains may persist as Typhoon Basyang continues to influence the region, increasing the risk of further flooding and landslides.

Mayor and local officials urged residents to stay informed through official advisories and avoid crossing flooded roads.

Damage assessment and relief operations are expected to continue in the coming days as authorities work to assist affected families and prevent additional casualties.
