In the midst of discussions over why the King of Philippine Comedy has not yet been recognized as a National Artist, Eric Quizon has spoken out to defend the legacy of his father, Dolphy.

Dolphy, whose true name is Rodolfo Quizon Sr., died on July 10, 2012, as a result of multiple organ failure brought on by complications from acute renal failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and severe pneumonia. When he passed away, he was eighty-three years old. Over the course of his more than 60-year career, he rose to prominence as one of the most well-known and significant characters in regional television and movies.

In an interview with PEP, Eric clarified that there have long been concerns to his father’s designation as a National Artist, with some critics allegedly questioning the quality of Dolphy’s work.

Recalling the arguments he has heard over the years, Eric said, “Because, honestly, sinasabi kasi nila ang mga pelikula ng daddy ko daw walang substance, walang laman, puro slapstick.”

Eric made it apparent that he strongly disagreed with these critics’ evaluation even though he did not identify them. “I beg to disagree,” he said, going on to explain why he thought such opinions missed the heart of Dolphy’s films.

Beneath the humor, Eric noted, his father’s work consistently revolved around values that Filipino audiences found very meaningful. “Pag pinanood mo ang pelikula ng daddy ko, parating he talks about family and kids at pagmamahal,” he said. “Parating may family, may touch na ganoon… my dad gives importance to family.”

Eric emphasized that Dolphy’s wider contribution to the nation should be considered in addition to ideas and storytelling. He mentioned how millions of Filipinos throughout decades were delighted by his father’s work.

Eric said, “Also, sa akin, yung contribution ng daddy ko sa bansa natin, napatawa niya, napasaya niya, kahit sa sandali, sa panonood sa kanya.”

He added, “Napasaya niya ang maraming Pilipino. So I think that’s a feat na hindi mapapantayan ng kahit na sino,”
