TACLOBAN CITY — Today, the San Juanico Bridge was reopened to cars carrying no more than 15 tons by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The 30 km/h speed limit will continue to be closely monitored and enforced, but two-way traffic is now permitted on the bridge.

This will let trucks and passenger buses weighing 15 tons or less to cross.

This morning, Ryan Reyes’ truck hauling sacks of mussels from Jiabong, Samar, passed the San Juanico Bridge.

Reyes claimed that due to restrictions on the San Juanico Bridge, they had to relocate the mussels three times in recent months.

Vendor Erlinda Gabino, 62, admitted that she benefited from the San Juanico Bridge’s closure to large cars in May of this year.

As a result, her restaurant serves truck drivers and stranded passengers from Mindanao.

The San Juanico Bridge’s reopening is more significant to her because it serves as a conduit for cars traveling from Luzon to Mindanao, even if she is already feeling the effects on her store and restaurant.

MARCOS: FASTER TRAVEL
On Friday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. examined the San Juanico Bridge.

The President claims that its reopening will expedite the flow of goods from Luzon to Mindanao.

For the bridge’s immediate renovation, the government spent P1.1 billion.

He went on to say that if the bridge had not been ignored by earlier administrations, the government could have saved a great deal.

According to Marcos, the administration would attempt to permit cars weighing more than 30 tons to cross the bridge once more next year.

Construction on the Juanico Bridge is still ongoing.

In order to prevent cars weighing more than 15 tons from passing, DPWH staff will currently strictly enforce the weighing of huge vehicles.

Within the week, DPWH is anticipated to publish new results and a schedule for the bridge’s potential full reopening.

As long as they comply to the 15-ton maximum load limit, light vehicles, such as private automobiles, motorcycles, vans, and small delivery trucks, are currently allowed to cross.
