Soon, fans of Olaf from Disney’s “Frozen” will be able to meet the snowman at Disney Parks—not as a costumed performer, but as a lifelike robot that essentially transfers the adored character from the movie into the real world.
In a series of social media posts and a YouTube documentary, the entertainment behemoth revealed the first glimpse of a new AI-powered Olaf robot on Tuesday.
Kyle Laughlin, senior vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development, stated in the YouTube video that the development of a robot that guests can interact with at Disney theme parks was motivated by Olaf’s popularity.
“Olaf is one of our most popular characters. He shows up in parades, in live entertainment shows, as well as in character meet-and-greets. So the demand to bring him to our parks is off the charts,” Laughlin stated in the video, which is a component of the series “We Call It Imagineering.”
“We’re excited to announce [that] Olaf will be available in both of our ‘Frozen’ worlds in Hong Kong and Paris early next year,” he stated.
Laughlin explained how deep reinforcement learning, a kind of artificial intelligence, enabled Olaf in a post on the Walt Disney Company’s website.
“A key technology in our platform is deep reinforcement learning that enables robotic characters to learn to imitate artist-provided motion in simulation,” he said.
“Deep reinforcement learning is a technology that helps robots acquire such [motor] skills in a shorter amount of time — for example, a BDX Droid or an Olaf learning to walk in a stylized way in the physical world. To make this technology scale well, we need fast and parallel simulation.”
The Olaf robot can interact and completely move his mouth, eyes, and detachable carrot nose.
“We want to bring these characters to life in ways our guests have imagined, but never seen before,” added Laughlin.
“Our latest Olaf is a fantastic example of representing an animated character as authentically as possible in the physical world — a challenging task because animated characters most often move in non-physical ways,” he stated.
The nearest place for Filipino fans to see the robotic Olaf is probably Hong Kong Disneyland, which has a “Frozen”-themed area called World of Frozen.
“Frozen” is a 2013 film that chronicles the exploits of Anna and Elsa, two royal sisters in the kingdom of Arendelle.
