On Friday, November 21 at the New Frontier Theater, Dionela proposed to Meizy Mendoza, his non-showbiz girlfriend, turning the opening night of his “The Grace Tour Manila” concert into an emotional turning point.
Dionela and Meizy have discreetly developed a relationship over the years that has grown alongside his music, and their collaboration is frequently evident in the feelings that are expressed in his songs. When he invited her to join him onstage in front of thousands of admirers who had seen his ascent, that history became a part of the occasion. He then requested that she sing the chorus of “Bahaghari,” a song that expresses his love for his girlfriend.
Fan-cams showed Dionela clearly struggling to gather himself before starting his message after Meizy finished singing.
He said, “Wait lang, uhm…” to thunderous applause from the audience, who appeared to sense what was going to happen.
He said to her, “Sinamahan mo ‘ko mula umpisa, hanggang sa dulo mahal.” “Naalala ko kasama kita noong binenta ko yung huling gitara ko at gusto ko nang mag-quit.” Umiiyak tayong dalawa nun tapos. Nandito na tayo sa New Frontier, ang daming tao. Sinamahan mo ‘ko mula umpisa hanggang ngayon. Gusto sana kitang yayain [na] samahan mo ‘ko habang buhay.
Meizy started crying as the crowd erupted. Then Dionela bent down and said, “Will you marry me, Meizy Joaquin Mendoza? “
With tears in her eyes, Meizy accepted the singer-songwriter right away, taking a step closer to their eternal relationship.
“Everybody, she said YES!” He said with excitement, which sparked more applause before the couple gave each other a firm embrace.
Dionela explained in a March post that the line “Loving you saved me” from his OPM hit song “Marilag” was actually dedicated to her partner, who helped him overcome mental health issues in 2022 after he lost interest in music.
Tonight, November 22, Dionela will make a comeback to the New Frontier Theater for Day 2 of “The Grace Tour Manila.”
