When Manilyn Reynes starred in the iconic “Aswang” episode of the second Shake, Rattle & Roll movie in 1990 at the age of just 18, she established herself in the horror film genre long before social media. As she commemorates her 43rd year in the entertainment industry this year, the actress expressed her gratitude to Filipinos for remembering her debut in the iconic Regal Films film.

Manilyn also contrasted her experience filming the first SRR movie with the most recent one she worked on this year during the event.

Veteran actress and singer Manilyn Reynes looked back on one of the most iconic moments of her early career—her role in the Shake, Rattle & Roll (SRR) episode “Aswang,” which to this day remains one of the most unforgettable entries in the long-running horror franchise.

Reynes, who was only a teen star when she appeared in the 1989 installment, said filming the episode was both thrilling and terrifying, especially since the “Aswang” storyline became a cultural phenomenon for Filipino horror fans.

Her performance in “Aswang” elevated her status as more than just a bubbly teen idol. The episode, known for its suspenseful buildup and chilling twists, is often cited as one of SRR’s strongest stories, with Reynes’ portrayal praised for its vulnerability and emotional depth.

She recalled that many scenes had to be shot late at night in isolated locations, which added to the eerie atmosphere.

Reynes also had memorable experiences of working with renowned horror actors who helped her during the shoot and the late director Pekto Del Rosario.

More than three decades later, Reynes said fans still approach her about the episode—some telling her it was the first horror story that gave them nightmares, others sharing how it became part of their childhood memories during Metro Manila Film Festival viewings.

Reynes said she feels honored to have been part of a franchise that has become a tradition for Filipino families.
