To guarantee the peaceful conduct of the May 9 elections, the Commission on Elections has announced the instructions for the 2022 election gun ban, which forbids conveying, carrying, and transporting firearms and other lethal weapons.

The Commission En Banc established the election gun ban from January 9 to June 8, 2022, which is also the formal election period under the Comelec calendar, in a resolution adopted on Nov. 10. Those convicted of carrying, transporting, or acting in security services without a certificate of authorization during the election gun prohibition will face a one- to six-year prison sentence with no chance of parole. They will also be barred from running for office and casting a ballot.

On Wednesday, one of the two jailed for reportedly breaching the election firearms ban was a minor. On Tuesday night, the two were arrested with firearms and ammo in different police patrols around Makati and Las Pińas. There was no exception to the firearms restriction for either of the two arrested.

Another suspect, Glaidee Felisilda, was seized as the minor was transferred to the Women and Children’s Protection Center.

The prohibition on guns will be in effect until June 8, 2022, and when the campaign season ends.
