One of the medical professionals stated that Russia’s “Sputnik V” vaccine is “risky”. Some of them are worried for the safety of the vaccine.
“I think it’s really scary. It’s really risky,” director of the Institute for Vaccine Safety Daniel Salmon said. He and other experts also claimed that Russia skipped the Phase 3 trials which is testing the vaccine in large crowds, as skipping this step could greatly affect the effectiveness of the vaccine.
“There are no Olympic medals for being first,” said Dr. Matthew Schmidt, University of New Haven Associate Professor of National Security and Political Science and a Russia expert, in emailed comments. “Cheating on the scientific process hurts the perception of vaccine safety everywhere. The goal isn’t to be first, it’s to be first in a way that gives people faith in a vaccine’s safety,” he said.
“This is all beyond stupid. Putin doesn’t have a vaccine, he’s just making a political statement,” virologist John Moore said.
The vaccine was made from an adenovirus — a harmless cold virus — carrying a coronavirus gene, similar to what AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson are using in their vaccines.
