Mika Bastillo, a pediatrician who’s wedding was postponed because of Covid-19 pandemic.
Mika, when she’s home, she stays in her “quarantent” outside their house. “Quarantent” was her mother’s idea since staying inside their house together with her family members is not an option for her.
Her senior citizen father has hypertension, and had a history of pneumonia and heart failure in 2017. One of her sisters has a congenital heart disease, waiting for a surgery and Mika has a 4-year-old nephew.
“It’s for my sanity, and to give me a semblance of normalcy,” she said.
She also has her own separate toilet and bathroom in the yard.
Mika then soon learned that Child’s Hope Hospital will be a referral center for COVID-19 patients.
She and her fellow pediatricians had to reorient themselves for their new job. With their specializations, they cannot just switch practices, which upsets her.
“The last time I handled an adult in-patient was in 2009. We are pediatricians. What if something happens to the adult patients under our care?” Mica said.
“Today I felt like losing my home, and then sent to a battle I was not equipped for,” she said in a Facebook status post on March 23. She didn’t think it would be to soon that she will be handling the coronavirus patients.
