Peru’s Ministry of Health announces the country’s first death due to Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The victim was a 78-year-old man who also suffered from high blood pressure. A 78-year-old man with pre-existing conditions was taken to hospital on Tuesday suffering from “severe respiratory failure,” the health ministry said in a statement.

According to Health Minister Elizabeth Hinostroza, he picked up the virus through “community transmission, that is to say, he contracted it from someone who became ill inside the country” and not from abroad.

PERU has 234 reported cases of coronavirus and called a state of emergency. They also declare a nighttime curfew to try to prevent its spread. Globally, over 227,952 have been infected and nearly 9,312 have died because of the viral disease that was first detected in Hubei, China.

Over 85,985, have recovered from the deadly disease.
