Eleven inmates MISSING in penal colony fire in Leyte

Top Trending topic online! There were 11 inmates reported missing after a fire broke out, held at the maximum security compound of the Abuyog Penal Colony in Abuyog town of Leyte, October 8, 2015. It not yet known were the prisoners escaped or died in the fire.

According to Eastern Visayas Police regional Director Chief Superintendent Asher Dolina, “The fire broke out at around 3:50 p.m. which the jail authorities believed was caused by faulty electrical wiring”.

The fire began in the restroom of the prison’s Building 1, a clarification of Penal Superintendent Geraldo Aro.

The Abuyog Penal Colony is one of the seven operating units under the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).  In the initial investigation of the authorities, a total of 1, 256 inmates while it is now only 1,245 had been accounted for.

“Additional security, two teams from Leyte Police Public Safety Company and a team from the Army 78th Infantry Battalion augmented the security personnel of Abuyog Penal Colony”, said Dolina.
